Dear Members,
I wish to first thank my colleagues on the
Committee of Management, for yet again, by majority vote,
electing me Chairman of the Malta Union Club.
As you are all aware, this year no
elections were held as the number of nominations received
equalled the number of vacancies required to form the Committee
of Management. Unfortunately, this seems to becoming the rule
rather than the exception and I feel that it is an unhealthy
sign for the future of the club. It is my belief that every
organization, association, club etc requires a change in its
management team every so often. It would also be advantageous to
the club if the younger members of the club came forward to sit
on the Committee of Management as without doubt they will bring
new ideas and possibly a new lease of life to what today,
unfortunately, is an “ageing club”. A combination of new young
blood and experienced senior club members will undoubtedly be
beneficial to the future of the club. I welcome to the
Committee of Management Mrs Carol Zammit Briffa and Wg Cdr
Joseph M.F. Vella, two long standing members of the club. On
behalf of the Committee of Management, members and myself, I
thank the outgoing Chairman, Dr. M.A. Refalo and Mr. Michael
Farrugia for their sterling work while serving on the Committee
of Management.
Eight years have passed since the club
moved to the present premises. Regrettably, during this time
club membership has fallen and the club experienced financial
constraints which restricted the various committees from
improving the various facilities and amenities and making the
club more homely and attractive to its members. Last year, the
Committee of Management managed to lease the first floor to
Nordic Odds Ltd for a period of three to five years and this
will undoubtedly reduce the financial burden and help to some
extent to cover the loss in subscriptions and the ever
increasing costs in the running and maintenance of the club.
This year, the Committee of Management
intends to redecorate and refurbish the second floor and
reception area in order to bring back the membership. The
Committee of Management will shortly be engaging the services of
a professional Interior Designer to advise us on the best way to
achieve our aim. The Committee is also preparing a marketing
plan with a view to attracting new members and also introduce
Corporate Membership.
Agreement between Malta Union Club/ Marsa
Sports Club and Lands Department for the extension of the lease
of Tigne Beach for a further eight years has been reached but
unfortunately the relevant agreement has still to be signed.
To conclude, I appeal to all members to
support the club by taking part in the various amenities
available at the club and wish you all a happy and enjoyable
summer.
E.H. Xuereb
